Limitation of medical knowledge and opportunities

The possibilities of human thinking are limited in comparison with the complexity of our organism, which we try to understand and study. We have to come to terms with this fact. The human body is the most complex biological system known in nature, and it is also the subject of study in medicine. A paradoxical situation has developed: the subject of medical research (who is studying) and the object (who is being studied) are equivalent in complexity. A legitimate question arises – to what level can a person (biological system) study himself?

The limitations of our knowledge and, accordingly, the possibilities in medicine are an objective reality and lead to diagnostic and treatment errors, inaccuracies in forecasting, side effects, complications, and medical impotence. On the other hand, the actual advances in medicine are undeniable and are an essential part of our evolution.

There are both objective possibilities and objective limitations of modern medicine. In real life, this contradiction is reflected in extremes from complete skepticism towards medicine, right up to refusal of treatment, to the absolutization of any medicine, method, doctor, and, as a result, further irrational actions. In both situations, the treatment does not give the desired effect.

The truth, as always, is in the middle. The possibilities of medicine are individual in each case. They depend both on the disease (type, stage, etc.) and on the patient (age, concomitant diseases, etc.). A proportional assessment of a specific situation and a professional forecast, despite all the limitations, are possible and remain the prerogative of a specialist.
